「日本人は～だ」といった文章を書く場面は、英語を勉強していると必ず出てきます。その時に「日本人」を英語ではどう表せば良いのでしょう？

大体この3パターンだと思いますが、どう違うのでしょう？
という質問を高校生の生徒からされてしまいました。
正直に言います。解りません。
これを考えないといけないケースはWritingの場合です。Readingの場合は、どれも「日本人」と理解すれば意味を把握することは問題ありませんので、３つの違いに悩むことはありません。
良く解らないので、これまでは「Japanese people」を使うように指導していました。意味的におかしな英文にはならないからです。
でも質問されたので、改めて調べることにしました。
Native Speakerの友人にメールで訊いてみました。
すると以下の通りの返信でした。

In regard to your question. This one is difficult and I had to think about it.
“Japanese” is both singular and plural. However adding the “The” seems to be correct for the plural.
「Japanese」は単数でも複数でも使えるけど、「The Japanese」複数形で使うよね。
ということで以下例文をくれました。
For example:
Mitsuo is Japanese. (singular)
みつおは日本人だ
I like the Japanese. (plural)
私は日本人が好きだ
The Japanese people have many ancient traditions. (plural)
日本人にはたくさんの伝統的なものがある
You also could say
“Japanese people have many ancient traditions.”
However, this does not sound quite right to me.
「Japanese people」を使っても良いけど、ちょっと違う感じがするかな
Therefore my thinking is that “the Japanese” is used for plural situations where as “Japanese” (without the The) is used for singular. The terms are somewhat interchangeable.
「the Japanese」は複数で使われて、「Japanese」は単数という感じだけど、どちらでも良い感じもするかな。
Consider the following two statements
The Japanese culture is different from the west.
Japanese culture is different from the west.
Both are correct, however the one starting with “The” is maybe more formal
「The」が着いたほうがフォーマルな感じがする
And if you say (without the The)
“I like Japanese.” It means I like the Japanese language
「I like Japanese」というと「日本語が好き」という意味
English can be very confusing sometimes !

そうこうしていると、1週間後にさらに補足説明のメールをもらいました。
I had a discussion with Nicole, Aimee and some other friends this weekend about the “The Japanese” grammar question you asked me.
家族や友達と話してみたら、別の意見が出たようです。
Another interpretation could be as follows:
When you use “The Japanese …” it could refer to the third person.
「The Japanese」という時は、第三者の発言
For example I, someone who is not Japanese would say:
The Japanese like baseball. (They)
Or The English like football
日本人は野球が好きだ。（日本人以外の人が発言する場合）
イングランドの人はフットボールが好きだ。（イングランド人ではない人の発言）
Compared to if your are were Japanese you would say
Japanese like baseball. (We)
上記の文章は（私達）日本人は野球が好きだ、という意味になる
Same as if you were English you would say
English like football
全部をきちんと訳してはいませんが、大体の意味は捉えられたでしょうか？
英語を母語とする人でもこれだけ悩むのだから、我々日本人が苦労するのも仕方ない、という気もしますが、これが英語の勉強ということでしょう。
これからも友人の協力を仰ぎながら、私自身も日々勉強しなくてはいけないな、と強く思わされた質問でした。
